USD/JPY grinds toward 161.804 resistance on aligned trend

Renzo

USD/JPY is grinding into the week's prior high at 161.804 with the trend structure as clean as it gets on a major pair.

The pair is nearly flat on the session but carries a 0.72% advance over the past week, tracking a 161.513 to 161.638 day range with no meaningful pullback finding grip. Price has now cleared every notable support level from the prior week, each resolved in the bid's favour without a significant retest, leaving a ladder of former resistance turned support beneath current price.

The setup is momentum-led and unambiguous. Price sits above EMA20 at 161.278, EMA50 at 160.834, and EMA200 at 159.449, with the full EMA stack ordered and widening. Trend is aligned up across the 1H, 4H and daily timeframes — the kind of structural confirmation trend-following desks look for before adding to a position. RSI sits firm but not stretched, and volatility is calm, suggesting the move is grinding rather than spiking. That combination — aligned trend, orderly momentum, compressed volatility — often precedes a measured extension rather than a reversal. The immediate ceiling sits at 161.804, a level that capped price during the prior session and now serves as the first clean upside objective.

We look to buy dips into the 161.278–161.513 zone on any intraday offer. A daily close below EMA50 at 160.834 is hard invalidation and demands a full reassessment.
